The Angelini Relays were founded in 1987 by local Chiropractor Dr. Joe Angelini and Mr. Bert Harris, then Athletic Director of Deerfield Beach High School. The all relay format and the team concept were fashioned after the Spiked Shoe Meet at the University of Pennsylvania , where the Penn Relays take place. The meet was designed to be early in the outdoor track season and is unique in the fact that every event is a relay, including the field events. The result was a fun event for the athletes and a showcase for the coaches to evaluate their talent pool for the upcoming season.
In 1992 the meet was in jeopardy of being canceled. A lack of funding and interest combined to put the event’s future in doubt. Angelini and Harris quickly raised enough capital from local businesses that to this day still participate and support the event. Seven schools and 250 athletes competed that day to help bring the Angelini Relays into a new era.
In 1993 the meet was moved from the modest facility at the high school to Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale . The improvement in facility and the exposure enabled the event to grow. Mr. Terry Snipes, took over as meet director and joined the Angelini Relay Team in 1995. Under the direction of Dr. Angelini and Mr. Snipes the event continued to grow in spite of the fact it had to be moved in 1998 and 1999. Coral Springs High School completed a state-of-the-art facility in February 2000, just in time for the 12 th Annual Angelini Relays. The event was hosted at Coral Springs for the 2000 and 2001 events. The event was moved due to scheduling problems in 2002 to the Westminster Academy track and field complex in Fort Lauderdale . A continued problem with scheduling in 2003 forced the first cancellation of the Relays. To escape these last minute scheduling problems, we are pleased to announce that the Angelini Relays has found a permanent home at Westminster Academy . This facility is a state of the art rubber surface track with a computerized timing system and will attract teams from all over the state.
In the 2004 event, the Angelini Relays played host to over 1100 student athletes from around Florida . Under the direction of new and present Meet Director Coach Ken Key, the meet picked up where we left off. Over 1000 spectators filled the Westminster Academy Track and Field Complex on a rainy South Florida weekend.
Dr. Donald Giddon, a Professor at Brown University has included the event in his ongoing research project studying the expressions of athletes. The relays have been part of Dr. Giddon’s research since 1994. Dr. Giddon has attended several of the Angelini Relays including the 2006 event.
The event is unique in many ways. Along with being an all relay format, the relays boast a co-ed running event for discus and shot put athletes, every athlete and coach receives a commemorative tee-shirt, and the meet has always run on time which is unheard of in track events.
The future of the Angelini Relays is as bright as it’s storied past. The event has established itself as the second longest running track meet in Florida . These additions will elevate the relays to a new status in the Florida Sports picture. This too will be unique from other races because it will start and finish on the track that will mimic the Olympic Marathon race where the race starts and finishes in a track and field stadium.
In 2007 we expanded to a two day event with small and large school divisions. The was well attended and was a great success with spectacular finals with a combined large and small school competition. The event did have a sad note, however, with co-founder Bert Harris passing away in January. We are sure he was there in spirit enjoying the competition.
March 1, 2008 is our 20 th. Anniversary and brings more excitement with the addition of a Middle school division. This will add to the pageantry of an already great event.
TheAngelini Relayshave become a tradition in Florida High School Sports. We are growing every year and the Angelini Relays is attracting statewide and National attention. The Angelini Relays are and will continue to be the standard for every Track and Field venue in Florida .
